I still dont think the WW2 theme is done to death in gaming. Only because some 08/15 games suit that theme it doesnt mean there can be nice mods. Except for RO/RO2 there are NO good WW2 tactical shooters out there. MOH, COD and BF are just plain simple kiddy shooters, so no real comparison possible.

A mod where yugoslavian partisans fight the german occupiers could be nice for example. Different missions like Blowing up a barrage or a bridge or whatever. German troops that have to clear a certain towndistrict or escort an important officer to safety etc. Can be a lot of fun and bring hell of a fresh air into the genre that is just occupied with US vs bad Germans. If you just imagine a game where the MG42 actually is as deadly as it was irl... Not that "I shoot 15 bullets into you jumping guy over there.. and you still keep jumping?" behaviour. The new Wolfenstein for instance could have been a really awesome tactical shooter with stealth elements, awesome atmosphere and a really really unique story (what if scenaria)... but they decided to make it boring. Asshats if you ask me.

I love shooting bolt action rifles ingame. The Mosin is kickass without scope. Unfortunately its pretty hard against a scoped MK18 Tongue

Wolfenstein was never tactical, not before, not now and most likely never will be. And that was never the point of this game anyways. Enemy Territory back then was quite fun, but thats all it was. If you're looking for tactics and WWII, play RO2. Thats made for that. I personally prefer Games with less antique weapons and timeframe.

Wonder when the first Total Conversion of INS will come. Thats usually how the real unique changes to a Game start, if there is Modding capability.

When it comes to 'tactical' in a WW2 game I highly recommend the Brothers in Arms series, particularly Road to Hill 30 and Earned in Blood.

Hell's Highway wasn't a bad game, but it felt a bit too easy, with a 3rd person cover system a la Rainbow Six Vegas

There's a mod that makes those games, no matter how dated graphically they are, intense as all hell. If I find it I'll post a link, it's probably on ModDB, anyways.

There are plenty of WW2 shooters on the market, from arcade'ish to tactical. Besides the vast amount of WW2 era RTS games. Modern themes seem to be more appealing to most players nowadays. It's maybe not overdone, but you can't blame the industry to follow the market.

Besides: modding INS to something like WW2 is by far more extensive than the Gulf War. Personally i'd prefer some polished mod / addon, over something that will probably never happen at all.

Which game do you not consider a "kiddy shooter"?

And why should Wolfenstein be any kind of slow paced tactical shooter? That doesn't make any sense to me.

just my 2 cents.

There are TONS of WW2 shooters. What we really need (in my opinion) is a good tactical Vietnam based shooter. I can only think of one good Vietnam game but its terribly out of date, Battlefield Vietnam. Other then that game I cant think of another FPS that is based in Vietnam. Vietcong series and Shellshock Vietnam are pretty good but also outdated. I would LOVE a total conversion mod based on the war in Vietnam. Maby with Navy Seals and SOG units or Marines and Army grunts vs Guerrilla Vietcong fighters and NVA.

In Country: Vietnam for Red Orchestra is going to be great.

Project Reality: Vietnam for BF2 is great.

I didnt meant wolfenstein should change all what it stands for. But with a storyboard, that is such a nice whatif scenario there could have been more than just dumb fragging. If I just remember what discussions came up after the the book "Fatherland" from Robert Harris and the later released movie about... Its a symbol for this society, that there can be great potential, but in the end its just some poopy game.

Same with other ww2 shooters. kiddy games are games where you need half of your magazine to drop an enemy, where the Iam Hero feeling tops the teamplay. Might be fun for kids and people who just want to frag, but for serious people its nothing. I also play cod2 now and then, just if iam bored and want some frags.

Hmmph. I assume you didn't try it on the hardest difficulty? Pretty challenging, and not really 'Hero Mode' through the game. The final boss in particular was tough as *********.

Anyways, why has ol' Wolfy even popped up in this conversation? It's an old school shooter, always has been, (hopefully, at least to me) always will be. It's fast, furious and challenging in a way that quite a few FPS' aren't anymore. To quote KC, "That's the way, uh-huh uh-huh, I like it, uh-huh uh-huh."

Which nice storyboard? It's a basic revenge story set while / after ze Nazis took over - has been done approx 644912 times in all kinds of games and movies.

As 13islucky already kinda said: it was never meant to be some super realistic book adaption to anything - it is what it is, a first person shooter with id involvement: fast, mean, and "fun".

Just because a game has 1shot1kill doesn't mean it's not a kiddy shooter, nor the other way around. The skill gap between a newbie and a pro is by far higher in most arcade FPS / RTS than in any kind of simulation. And depending on the mode the teamplay gap is even higher. And what do you need to fill the skill gap? You may guess...

On the other hand: for me games like COD / CS have a longer and smoother learning curve with, while games like INS(mod) / DOD (/ BF) go more into "steps".

Anyways, i wish we had some Mods here that aren't VAC banned, frauds, or simply inactive, so we could have a good discussion about FPS in another topic, instead of completely derailing this one. (meaning, if there's still an active one, moving our posts would be nice ^^)
So, please create a new topic, and let's get back to the actual one, shall we?

move whatever you want to move Smile

Since there are no more real possibilities to bring up in the mod idea thread (well maybe ww1, boston tea party, kolumbus vs indians) a poll might be the way to go.

@topic

well I guess there can be different opinions.

I just think ww2 theme is not played to death. Only the standard theme us vs bad germans. The best "first" mod of insurgency might be a military simulation in the iraq. Like it was mentioned before. realistic squadlayouts, weapons, skins. That should be tjhe easiest of all suggestions. Lets see how many people even play a mod for a game that has not that much players yet :/

pirates!!!!!

muzzle loaders and swords plox!!!!

have 2 boats tied to each other side on and you need to take the other bridge to win.

nam would be cool but idk how well the engine can do woodlands.

iraq war is too close to what we have imo, some 80s conflicts would work better imo. russia vs taliban, sas vs ira you know. different from the modern stuff.

Personally I will never be able to grow tired of ww2 as the weapons and theaters are perfect from a gaming perspective. It just have a natural balance and diversity to it.

To be honest one thing that me and my friends have always been talking about is a medieval based game set in a zombie apocalypse or something like that. Now dont shoot me down yet, I know many zombie games are badass in themselves with all the guns and stuff. But I personally think that given the games out there like Day Z, Dead Rising, Left 4 Dead, Dead Island have always had this satisfying experience in terms of melee weapons and that feeling you get when you cut down a crap ton of zombies almost instantly, or the crunch, come on we ALL love to feel that crunch when you hit a zombie. I mean throw in a decent story or make it kinda of State of Decayish and I think you can have a very damn good game on your hands.
